John Back WoodTurner Specialising in Olivewood. Based on the Greek island of Crete.
Working from his home in Crete John works almost exclusively in this beautiful wood.He is influenced by classical shapes and by the forms suggested by the patterns and figuring of the wood itself. Olive wood is very dense and close-grained and, with its light sapwood and darker heartwood it ranges in colour from golden to very dark brown, sometimes streaked with black. It is a beautiful wood; a wood turner's dream. Because of its density, olive wood takes a long time to dry. The wood must be obtained freshly cut before the sun has cracked the logs. Then it is cut into blanks of various sizes and dried for some years as gradually as possible, to prevent cracking.
The workshop is situated in the village of Agia Ioannis, 15 minutes drive north of Plakias on the south coast of Crete, Greece.
